Forget Perfect: We're Here for the Process
Let’s get one thing out of the way: F*ck perfect.
Yeah, we said it. There’s no room for perfection in the pursuit of living a life on your own terms. Personal growth is an imperfect process. Here’s what you get when you choose process over perfection:
A Chance to Fail.
Failure is a sign that you tried, a sign that you made an effort to break out of the norm, reach beyond your comfort zone, and shake things up a bit. Whether that’s conquering your fear of heights to go rock climbing, or setting a goal to eat fresh greens at every meal for one week, you tried. You mustered up the strength and commitment to implement it.
Take a page from the SPANX CEO’s book on celebrating failure. Failure is data for growth. It’s not a wasted effort if you think of every go-around as an experiment, whether it’s considered a failure or success. Every failed experiment gives you more information to do better next time, and ultimately leading you closer to your goal.
Freedom to Let Go.
When you acknowledge that you’re not perfect, you gain the freedom to let go of external expectations. From that mindset, you’re able to make decisions based on what’s best for you.
Forget the “shoulds” and focus on what actually works.
Spare yourself the wasted time of trying to implement changes or behaviors that just don’t work for you. Let go of expectations to leave room for solutions that move you closer to achieving your goals.
Sounds good right?
One more thing: You breathe a little deeper too. Choosing process over perfection isn’t always easy, but it’s definitely worth it.
