Sweaty Hair Care 101

Who has time to wash their hair? Not us! In fact, if we're being completely honest, avoiding it is the reason we choose to skip a lot of workouts.

The good news is that it doesn't have to be. Justine at Texture Hair Spa showed us three ways to take care of sweaty hair so that we get to have our cake (workout) and eat it too (not wash our hair). Also, we should have cake!

P.S. We know these tips don't work the same on all hair, so if you have tips that work for you we'd love to add them to the list.

1. Pre-Workout Style

The goal for your workout hair style is to avoid creases and anything too tight to your head (and therefore the sweat that comes from it). That's why we're big fans of the scrunchie. Yep, we said it!

We show a few example styles in the video:

  1. Loose Pony Tail
  2. Loop Bun
  3. Princess Leia Bun
  4. Loose French Braid

If you have short hair, try the same hairstyles but do two of each so that one bun or pony tail is toward top of your head and one is toward the bottom.

2. Post-Workout Quick Wash

If you've really worked up a sweat and have access to a sink, you might consider a quick wash. The goal for the quick wash is to wash only the areas that get the sweatiest: your roots or your bangs.

We show these steps in the video:

  1. Gather and tie the hair you're going to wash.
  2. Pull the rest of your hair back in a scrunchie (yep, we said it again!).
  3. Untie the hair you're going to wash.
  4. Lean over and wash it in the sink!

3. Post-Workout Dry Shampoo

If your hair is 98% dry shampoo, you fit in perfectly around here! If it's not, allow us to introduce you to your new best friend. The goal of the blow dry and dry shampoo combination is to give your hair new life without washing it.

We show these steps in the video:

  1. Blow dry your sweaty hair. This is crucial!
  2. Apply dry shampoo throughout your hair focusing on your roots.
  3. Rub in any areas that show white powder.

BONUS: Habits to avoid

Just as there are things you can do to make the your sweaty situation better, there are things you might be already doing to make it worse. We don't share them in the video, so here you go!

Here are some habits to avoid:

  1. Working out with wet hair
  2. Tying your hair back too tightly
  3. Wearing headbands or hats while you're working out
  4. Rubbing your hair with a towel after your workout

Let us know how these tips work for you and if you have any to add to the list!
